Phytolith Palaeoenvironments at Mumba Rock Shelter

The rock shelter site of Mumba in northern Tanzania plays a pivotal role the overall study late Pleistocene archaeology East Africa with an emphasis on Middle to Later Stone Age transition. We used phytolith analysis reconstruct general plant habitat physiognomy around from onset recent times, tallying 4246 individual phytoliths 19 archaeological samples. Statistical explored richness, diversity, dominance, and evenness, along principal components compare distributions over site’s sequence known habitats today. Generally, record signifies paleoenvironments analogs Somalia – Masai bushland grassland, as well Zambezian woodlands.
